Gary Citizens Asked to Limit Travel Due to Blizzard and Power Outages

Gary, IN – City of Gary officials have once again implemented their snow plan with the anticipation of snow accumulation reaching in excess of 12 inches by late tonight. Residents are being asked to refrain from traveling on the streets after 2:00p.m. to allow staff to perform effective snow removal. In addition, the City has experienced a series of street light and residential power outages, which local utility company NIPSCO is currently addressing.

“Our snow plan has been fully implemented, now we need the cooperation of our residents,” said Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson. “We are asking citizens to remain in their homes and limit their driving as much as possible beginning at 2:00p.m. in order to stay safe and to keep streets clear so that plows can maneuver the streets at a quicker pace.”

The power outages may also impact the operation of some railroad crossing gates, so drivers are asked to cross railroads with extreme caution.

The City’s snow plan calls for the clearing of the main streets within the first 24 hours followed by the clearing of side streets and alleys within 48 – 72 hours. Towing is also in effect where signage indicates “no parking” in areas of 2-inch accumulation or more. Citizens are asked to please adhere to the signage to avoid being towed.
To report a snow emergency, please call (219) 881-1311, download the Gary 311 app or report the emergency online at www.gary.in.us. To report a power outage call 1-800-464-7727 (1-800-4NIPSCO).

Remember, parking bans are in effect. Residents are not to park in marked snow zones. Towing will be enforced.
