Urban Entrepreneur Initiative (UEI)  

Last week, Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson joined two business partners and the Gary Chamber of Commerce in launching the Urban Entrepreneur Initiative (UEI). Thanks to this partnership, a total of 1,000 Gary small business owners will receive free training and accounting assistance. The program includes donations of resources to local entrepreneurs worth up to $250,000, including Five Plus Trax, a cloud computing dashboard application designed to help small business owners better understand and manage their companies’ finances, specially-designed start-up training using the “Business Basics” curriculum, and space in a City-owned facility that will serve as the UEI office and entrepreneurs’ resource center.

Michael Jackson Celebration of Life Block Party

JWA Boys and Girls Club Needs Donations

The JWA Boys and Girls Club is asking for help in securing the final dollars to help fund the renovation of the new facility at the Tolleston site. Curfew Laws To Be Enforced

Now that school is back in session, the Gary Police Dept. will be strongly enforcing the curfew laws. It shall be unlawful for any minor child the age of 17 years of age and under to be on any street or alley or to loiter on any street or alley or to be in any motor vehicle or public place between the hours of 10:00 P.M. to 5:00 A.M. Sunday through Thursday, and between the hours of 12:00 A.M. to 5:00 A.M. each Friday and Saturday.

The City of Gary further indicates that this ordinance does not apply to a minor child who is: (i) accompanied by the minor child’s parent, guardian, or custodian: (ii) accompanied by an adult specified by the minor child parent, guardian, or custodian: or (iii) participating in, going to, or returning from lawful employment, a school or organized sport sanctioned activity, or religious event.

If a minor is found in violation of this ordinance, an officer will detain said minor. If a minor’s parent is in the immediate area, the minor will be transported to the parent and a citation will be issued to the parent, However, if the parent is not in the immediate area, the minor will be transported to the Gary Police Department located at 555 Polk Street and the parent will be contacted and required to retrieve the minor where a citation will be issued to the parent.

Community Development Department Requests Bids

The Community Development Department is requesting bids for home rehabilitation work at selected locations.

The rehabilitation work to be performed under the Department’s Home Repair and Emergency Rehab programs will be funded with Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. These programs provide rehabilitation work on the homes of low to moderate income residents. Contractors submitting bids must be licensed general contractors, must have bonding and insurance and must be certified under the U.S. EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule for lead-safe work practices. Copies of licenses, bonding and insurance must be provided.

ALL Bid Packages will be available on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 thru Friday, August 23, 2013; Monday, August 26, 2013 and Tuesday, August 27, 2013 between the hours of 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM ONLY. ALL Bid Packages are distributed in the Department of Commerce, 401 Broadway, Suite 300, Gary, Indiana 46402. To receive a Bid Package, you must see Lakia Manley in the Department of Commerce.

Bids will be received up to and including the time for the call for bids at the meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 10:00 AM. The Board of Public Works and Safety meeting is held at Gary City Hall, 401 Broadway, 2nd Floor in the Cleo Wesson Lounge. Bids may be submitted prior to the meeting at the Department of Public Works, 401 Broadway, 3rd Floor Gary, Indiana 46402. For more information, contact Public Works at 219-881-1310.
