Here are some updates on recent and upcoming things going on in the City of Gary.

Hot Patch Machine

The General Services Department recently acquired a new Hot Patch machine that will fill potholes in a more permanent manner. Report potholes by downloading the City of Gary’s free 311 App. Click on this link to access the app: http://www.gary.in.us/publicworks/citizen-311-responder.asp

 

 

Marquette Park Bike Trail Ride

Those who are interested in riding the bike trails in Gary’s Miller section are invited to come out on Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m. at Marquette Park. The group will meet in the parking lot east of the playground. There will be a short ride through the new lake trails and a longer ride through the National parks trails. Flood Damage Reporting

Hoosiers who sustained damage caused by severe weather and flooding beginning April 17-22, 2013 can report damage online at:

Student Art Showcase Month

During the month of May the Miller Beach Arts and Creative District will feature student art work from the Wirt-Emerson Visual and Performing Arts High Ability Academy. As part of this collaboration choral, instrumental and dance performances will also take place on two different weekends.Saturday, May 11 will feature four high school groups at the district’s art gallery located at 540 Lake Street at 7:00p.m. On Friday, May 17 two younger groups will perform at the district’s art gallery at 7:00p.m. The exhibits and performances are free and open to the public.

 TBLA School Board Vacancies

Thea Bowman Leadership Academy (TBLA) Charter School will have two School Board vacancies beginning July 1, 2013 and ending June 30, 2016. Any citizen interested in serving on the Board should submit a letter of interest and a resume or vita addressed to: Drexel Foundation for Educational Excellence, Inc., P. O. Box 4661, Gary, IN 46404 on or before April 30, 2013.

University of Chicago Students and City of Gary’s Redevelopment Department

University of Chicago graduate students in partnership with the City of Gary’s Redevelopment Department will begin volunteering as survey takers of vacant buildings throughout the city. This semester, the students are going to collect data in Aetna, Glen Ryan, downtown, Emerson, the Lake Street area of Miller, and the Broadway corridor from 11th to 80/94. The data collected will be analyzed and suggestions made on next steps to address the vacant structures. Findings from the data collection will be shared with the public in the fall of 2013.
