  • Feb. 4 - The Health Department is taking appointments for the Affordable Care Act health insurance enrollment period.  Enrollment days are every Wednesday from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm from now until February 11, 2015.  Appointments can be made by calling the Gary Health Department at 219-882-5565.

  • Feb. 5 - IU Northwest celebrates Black History Month - Indiana University Northwest’s African American Studies and Department of Minority Studies in partnership with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs, invites the campus and community to celebrate Black History Month. At 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, IU Northwest welcomes Mr. Alfred Baker and the West Indian Folk Dancing Company and Indiana University’s African American/African Diaspora Dance Company to its Bruce W.   • Feb. 6 - During scheduled Fridays from Feb. 6 - April 10, Northwest Indiana families and individuals earning less than $50,000 will be able to take advantage of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Sponsored by the IU Northwest School of Business and Economics, Northwest Indiana Community Action, and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the program provides free electronic tax filing of federal and state income tax returns.   • Feb. 7 - Winterfest. 10 am - 4 pm. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education, 100 N Lake Street. With or without snow, we will be embracing winter fun. Join a park ranger for beginner instructions to cross-country skiing in Miller Woods. Skis, boots and poles furnished free of charge. Teen aged ParKids will be on hand to help. If preferred, snowshoes can be checked out instead of skis. Take part in a friendly fort building contest in our adjacent Nature Play Zone. Before you leave, warm up with hot chocolate or coffee while you explore our African Americans in our National Parks exhibit indoors. Make a snow globe, bird feeder or other craft to take home.

  • Feb. 8 - Negro Spiritual Concert -  The Gary Civic Chorale presents their Fifteenth Annual Interfaith-Community-Based Negro Spiritual Chorale on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at 4:00 PM at Carter Memorial CME Church 635 W. 49th Avenue, Gary, Indiana 46408, Reverend Willie Weaver, Jr., Host Pastor. Various Choirs and Groups from Gary and Chicago will render traditional spiritual selections.   • Feb. 11 - IU Northwest to host film screening and discussion of ‘Before They Die!’ -  Indiana University Northwest’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs invites the campus and community to a film screening and director discussion of “Before They Die!” on Wednesday, Feb. 11 in the Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium, located in the Savannah Center. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the film will begin at 5:30 p.m. Additionally, an abbreviated viewing of the film will be shown on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. with a panel discussion to follow at 3 p.m. in the Bruce W.   • Feb. 13 - Methodist Hospital Foundation Vendor Craft Bazaar - The Methodist Hospital Foundation is hosting a vendor craft Bazaar on February 13,2015 at the North Lake campus in the South Pavilion Auditorium. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The public is invited. February 14

  • Feb. 14 - 12pm - 4pm.  Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education, 100 N Lake Street. Making Maple Syrup. Learn all the tips and tricks of making pure maple syrup in your home or backyard. If you have twelve inch diameter maple trees or others like black walnut, beech and hickory, you can make your own syrup. This program will show how simple household tools like drills and spiles can help you do the work.

Mar. 28 - ARISE 2nd Annual Art in Motion GALA on Saturday March 28th, 2015

Yoga Tales.  Join local yoga expert Angela Appleton-Carver for a free, one hour yoga tale. This program is created to teach yoga poses & postures through storytelling. Apr. 18 - Celebrate Parenting! Parenting Awareness Month Indiana (PAMI) is an annual public education and awareness initiative of the Responsible Parenting Campaign that calls attention to the need for effective and responsible parenting, parent education, and supportive resources to help families thrive. Parade starts at 10AM forms at 9:00 at 13th and Massachusetts. The parade theme is keeping the promise bringing the troops home.
